Democratic Resilience and the EU’s Future at its Eastern Borders: Institutional

Transformation in Times of Geopolitical Uncertainty

16 May 2026,  Workshop, 10.00-11.00, i4, i Building, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi
This launching workshop introduced the ResEast project, which examined democratic resilience and institutional transformation at the EU’s eastern borders in the context of heightened geopolitical uncertainty triggered by the war in Ukraine. Focusing on Romania and the Republic of Moldova, the event took stock of their democratic trajectories since transition, assessing the capacity of democratic institutions to withstand internal and external shocks, adapt to crisis, and uphold European core values. By bringing together empirical evidence and conceptual debate on resilience, the workshop contributed to broader discussions on the EU’s future, security, and cohesion in an age of persistent inequality and instability. In addition, the workshop included discussions on the project’s future activities and project management aspects. Participants Loredana Maria SIMIONOV (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania), Cristian NITOIU (Loughborough University London, United Kingdom) Nadiia BUREIKO (Foreign Policy Council 'Ukrainian Prism', Ukraine), Teodor Lucian MOGA (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania), Ion MUȘCHEI (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania), Irina CLIPCA (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania), Ciprian ALUPULUI (Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania),
