Essay Contest “Looking to the future - Common values, common

dreams”.

Every year of the implementation of the proposed project, there will be organised a contest of essays addressing the students all over the network, on topics related to European Studies (e.g. European Integration, European values and culture, European cooperation, EU foreign affairs, ENP and EaP, etc.). The contest will be organised in two steps: 1. local contest (in the universities partners; the network’ non-academic partners will be involved in promotion and evaluation); 2. International contest. The essay contest will be opened to a series of topics and themes (past, current and future) which are directly linked to the field of European Studies. In the step 1, each university will be responsible for organising such competition in its own premises and then selecting their top 3 representatives for the international contest which will be organised across the entire network. We will highly encourage the participation of students from other specialisations than European Studies. Following the contest organised locally, the top 3 essays from each university will participate in the step 2 in a competition organised across the network, where the first five selected essays will be awarded. The scientific committee will consist of members from the network (different partners, different countries), which grants this activity a multinational dimension. Evaluation criteria will be established by a network procedure adopted to the first management meeting. Besides the promotion of intercultural dialogue, tolerance, mutual understanding, by participating in such competition students (BA & MA) will also have the chance to acquire new knowledge and competences in European Studies which, in turn, will lead to their personal development. Activity responsible: Sorin MAZILU (P1) One of the highlights among the events organized within the network in the first year of implementation was the essay contest. The event aims to promote intercultural dialogue, tolerance, mutual understanding among students from the network countries, as well as to enhance knowledge and competences in the field of European Studies by giving the opportunity to the students to express their ideas, believes or concerns regarding EU. The activities concerning organizing the contest were initiated in the beginning of 2018 and last until august 2018, implying continuous cooperation between network’s partners in order to establish the general rules of the competition, to promote the event, to evaluate the papers, etc. For encouraging students to participate and actively get involved in shaping the academic discourse on EU themes, the contest was organized in two stages: a national one (organized in each country) and an international one (organized across the network, where the best essays from each country were subscribed). The students showed great enthusiasm in participating at the competition, which not only lead to the subscription of many interesting essays, but also attracted other institutions in supporting or participating at the event, encouraging academic collaboration and friendship within network countries. For example, in Ukraine, in addition to the contest organized by the partner from Chernivtsi (Yuriy Fedkovich National University), the Mechnikov National University from Odessa expressed their interest in join the competition and to support it by its own means, even it wasn’t initially listed among our network partners.  At the international stage, from the many papers subscribed to competition, 20 essays were selected representing the winners of each country. Considering the participants enthusiasm and efforts, as well as the interesting points of view expressed in their works, we decided to annually publish the best essays in a distinct book, in addition with the other deliverables of the project, the costs of editing and publishing being supported by our own means, outside the project’s budget. No. of participants national stage:  84 No. of participants international stage: 20
